Pitt Conser Procedures

In addition to responsibility for cataloging southwestern Pennsylvania newspapers, Pitt is also responsible, as a CONSER library, for authenticating cataloging done at other sites in Pennsylvania. Cataloging workforms (but not surrogates) are usually received from each site once or twice a month. At the time of writing of this article, the procedures followed by Pitt staff are:

Check to make sure that all mandatory fields and sub-fields required in the document " United States Newspaper Program Base Level Cataloging" are present.

Search OCLC to determine that the record is not a duplicate of another record in the database.

Check all linking fields for consistency.

Contact catalogers at the appropriate sites should questions arise.

Determine that the bibliographic description is consistent with rules outlined in the Newspaper Cataloging Manual, USNP Bibliographic Notes, AACR2, and LC Rule Interpretations.

Compare holdings as represented on the LDRs with the bibliographic record to assure that dates are consistent.

Call the Library of Congress for assistance in resolving extremely complex cataloging problems, if necessary.

Attach 010 and 042 fields to the record.
